Teacher Writing a Formula on a Blackboard

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
-Nelson Mandela

Some educators teach the subject matter, some teach children how to be adults, the best teach both. These are key philosophies for how I taught every student who walked through my door. It is crucial to differentiate individual interests, history, and provide accommodations for each student to succeed.

Sample Calculus Lesson

Teaching calculus became a passion of mine after overhauling the program to make it more accessible to students by eliminating academic barriers.

I collaborated closely with colleagues to develop common lesson, assignments, and assessments. We grew the program from 25 to 90 students per year and have consistently achieved above an 80% pass rate on the AP Calculus AB exam in comparison to the 58% national average pass rate.

This is a lesson teaching the concept of finding the area of a solid formed with a known cross-section shape. Students would already know both differentiation and integration techniques.

Algebra II Lesson Video

During the pandemic, I mastered the skill of distance teaching utilizing video recordings and digital learning platforms. Here is an example video from an Algebra II class. This was a lesson at the beginning of our Probability & Statistics unit at the end of the year. The class was structured to where we joined on zoom to do a warm up reviewing or previewing relevant topics, then students had  asynchronous time to review the lesson video and do their assignment. Later in the day I held office hours to support students who had questions or needed a virtual space to work.

Additional Activities

  • Coordinated and led a meeting with key stakeholders to address curricular overlap present within Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, developing all strategic planning to increase regulatory compliance and standards alignment across courses in direct support of over 250 students enrolled.

  • Served as a member of the Superintendent hiring committee, evaluating individuals’ qualifications to ensure that the most appropriate applicant was offered the leadership position within the district.

  • Promote sustained alignment of mathematic curriculum with state and other K-12 standards as a member of the district-wide Math Advisory Group.

  • Serve as the advisor for the organization’s National Honor Society Chapter (approximately 550 members), sustaining chapter compliance with various standards and regulations as well as accurate record keeping in addition to leading monthly officer meetings and event strategic planning.

School Notebook

Through my love of math, I have seen the amazing value of it. If taught correctly, mathematics is a gateway to understanding the world and the careers within it. Additionally a main goal of education is personal responsibility, in other words, to teach students to take full responsibility for their learning and their lives. As educators, we are not just teaching our subject matter to students, we are also encouraging students to build their own identities and become active members of society.
